Bill Hopkins Discusses Ethics of AI at Emerging Issues in Health Care Law Conference

April 23, 2024

Spencer Fane attorney Bill Hopkins presented at the 25th annual Emerging Issues in Healthcare Law Conference (EMI), an April 3-6 event hosted in New Orleans by the American Bar Association Health Law Section. The firm also served as a conference sponsor.

For his session, AI and Legal Ethics: Considerations for Health Care Attorneys, Bill joined IMA Financial Group’s Jason Lacey in examining emerging legal ethics issues health care attorneys encounter as the use of artificial intelligence increases. They explored the use of generative artificial intelligence in performing legal tasks and preparing legal documents, as well as evolving rules and guidelines that may restrict such use. Bill and Jason also addressed specific ethics concepts such as technology competence, candor to a tribunal and fellow attorneys, maintaining confidentiality and privilege, and discharging supervisory obligations.

Other timely topics explored at this year’s EMI conference include DOJ enforcement, emerging therapies and alternative substances in health care, the Physician Self-Referral Law, the mental health crisis, and private equity. Attendees also enjoyed opportunities to network, explore New Orleans, and attend a scholarship and awards reception.

At Spencer Fane, Bill serves as Office Managing Partner for the Austin office and as a member of the Spencer Fane DEI Committee. As an attorney, he helps to protect health care providers and health care companies against the many potential pitfalls in the industry, serving as both an advocate and educator for his clients in administrative law, regulatory defense, transactional work, compliance, and litigation.
