Spencer Fane Team Presents at Missouri Bar Annual Meeting

October 5, 2022

Spencer Fane attorneys Leslie Greathouse and Julia Vander Weele both served as featured speakers at 2022 Annual Meeting of the Missouri Bar and Judicial Conference on September 16 in Springfield, Missouri.

During her event presentation, ERISA Issues for Law Firms and Businesses, Julia provided an overview on ERISA, including reporting and disclosure. She also shared examples of fiduciary duties and best practices for managing fiduciary risk.

In her event, Leslie provided an overview of key ethical issues that all lawyers and law firms, no matter the size, need to understand. The presentation, Remote Control: Ethical Issues Related to the Remote Practice of Law, included a deep-dive into issues related to technology, competency, confidentiality, and the unauthorized practice of law.

At Spencer Fane, Leslie serves as the firm’s General Counsel and helps businesses accused of violating laws maneuver the labyrinth of complex litigation by representing them in state and federal courts and in arbitration and mediation proceedings. Whether she is advising clients on risk avoidance, counseling them on an insurance matter, addressing their business needs within current legal and regulatory constructs, or using her skills as a trained mediator, Leslie is at her best when she is helping a client resolve a problem or challenge facing their business.

Julia practices in the areas of employer health and welfare plans and retirement plans. She helps employers and other benefit plan sponsors comply with a broad range of legal requirements, including the Tax Code and labor laws, allowing them to recruit and retain talented employees with competitive tax-favored benefit packages while shielding their directors and officers from personal liability. She also advises clients on laws applicable to other employee benefit plans and programs, including health care reform and ERISA.
