March 18, 2024

Spencer Fane LLP is pleased to announce Ian M. Rubenstrunk joined the Financial Services practice group as an of counsel attorney in the firm’s Minneapolis office.

Ian represents a wide array of clients including banks, credit unions, non-traditional lenders, private equity, equipment financers, receivers, landlords, and asset buyers in financial services matters. His extensive experience in financial services is focused on all sides of distressed transactions and turnaround matters, with specific experience in commercial foreclosures, receiverships, bankruptcies, out of court workouts, and litigation involving financial transactions.

Ian leverages his wide-ranging background in the financial services industry to solve complex operational and financial problems. Early in his career, he represented debtors in Chapter 11 bankruptcy filings and clients facing foreclosure and debt collection. This was followed by time with the U.S. Trustee’s Office in the Northern District of Illinois and a stint clerking at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Minnesota for Chief Judge Gregory F. Kishel and Judge William J. Fisher. During his clerkship, Ian worked on cases covering myriad issues, including on the fallout from a multi-billion-dollar Ponzi scheme.

“Ian brings comprehensive experience serving a wide range of clients in financial services,” said Donald G. Heeman, Office Managing Partner for Spencer Fane in Minneapolis. “His broad background will be a significant contribution to our dynamic team structure in Minnesota and add a skillful problem-solver to the Financial Services team and firm as a whole.”

Following his clerkship, Ian spent several years in private practice at a firm in Minneapolis in the Creditors’ Remedies and Financial Litigation departments. Most recently, he worked at a consulting firm where he served as a court-appointed receiver of companies in a variety of industries in cases across the country. Ian currently serves as the State Director for the Minnesota Chapter of the Commercial Receivers Association.

Ian earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Illinois Chicago John Marshall Law School and his undergraduate degree in English and Political Science from the University of Colorado Boulder.
