Spencer Fane Adds 22 New Attorneys in Denver in 2021

Spencer Fane LLP is pleased to announce that attorneys Mitch Reid, Kurt Rozelsky, Nate Barker, Jose Castro, Charlotte McEwen and Michael Kaufmann have joined the firm’s Denver office. Reid and Rozelsky join the firm as a partners; Barker as of counsel; and Castro, McEwen and Kaufmann as associates. Reid, Rozelsky, Barker, Castro and Kaufmann will be members of the firm’s Litigation and Dispute Resolution Practice Group, and McEwen will join the Labor and Employment Practice Group.

Focused on client needs, Spencer Fane continues to take active steps to grow its presence in the Denver market, adding 22 attorneys to the office in various groups since the start of 2021.

ABOUT THE ATTORNEYS 

Mitch Reid serves clients across a wide breadth of industries, focused on fiercely defending companies when litigation arises. His practice centers around helping managed care entities and administrators in all aspects of insurance litigation, including ERISA, Medicare, FEHBA and Affordable Care Act disputes. Reid also has extensive experience in ERISA benefits litigation, bad faith insurance practices litigation, prompt pay litigation and provider litigation, including contractual and extra-contractual disputes with providers and hospitals. Additionally, Reid has experience in oil and gas disputes, toxic tort litigation, contract disputes, debt collection, Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) disputes, and False Claims Act and qui tam actions. He completed his undergraduate studies at Indiana University and earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Houston Law Center.

Kurt Rozelsky represents clients across a wide range of industries, from local businesses and individuals to international product manufacturers, helping them navigate difficult circumstances involving potential financial and legal liability. This includes a specific focus on complex litigation and trials involving catastrophic torts and insurance coverage matters. Because of this, Rozelsky routinely assists clients with difficult decisions regarding the retention of involved personnel and engagement of technical experts, while addressing applicable federal and state regulations. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Virginia and later earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Georgia School of Law. Rozelsky also serves as a member of the American College of Trial Attorneys.

Nate Barker focuses his practice on defending insurance companies and their insureds in both first-party and third-party claims, helping his clients protect their assets in high-stakes situations. He has a wide variety of experience in all phases of civil litigation and has conducted numerous hearings and trials and managed the multiple components of the discovery phase of cases, including resolving discovery disputes. Barker completed his undergraduate studies and master’s degree at the University of Colorado and earned his Juris Doctor from the American University Washington College of Law. He currently serves as the Secretary of the Board and a member of the Fund Development Committee for SafeHouse Denver and is a former board member of the Curious Theatre Company and the Rocky Mountain Chapter of Hostelling International.

Jose Castro focuses his practice on insurance litigation, municipal law, civil rights defense, employment law and products liability, bringing experience handling cases in federal, state and administrative forums, handling matters with a focus on efficiency and communicative client service. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Nebraska and earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Wisconsin Law School. After law school, Castro spent two years clerking for the Honorable Timothy M. Witkowiak at the First Judicial Circuit Court of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.

Charlotte McEwen brings a background in general civil litigation matters while developing a strong track record of experience in labor and employment. She focuses her practice on preventive counsel for employers while also addressing related litigation when the need arises. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of North Carolina and earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan Law School. After law school, McEwen served as a judicial law clerk for Justice Peter J. Maassen of the Alaska Supreme Court

Michael Kaufmann works closely with insurers, helping his clients defend against bad faith claims, class action lawsuits, and complex insurance coverage litigation. Leaning on years of experience in litigation and highly regulated industries, Kaufmann guides his clients through difficult circumstances so they can continue running their businesses smoothly. Kaufmann completed his undergraduate studies at Iowa State University and earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Iowa College of Law. Following law school, he served as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Celeste F. Bremer of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa.
