Spencer Fane attorney Kim Kerns recently finished her stint as the attorney coach for the Plano East Senior High School mock trial team during the group’s 2022-23 season.
In this volunteer role, Kim mentored a female-led team through several months of preparation for the annual Texas High School Mock Trial Competition. This work involved helping the aspiring lawyers prepare their case examinations, arguments, and content. Kim also provided guidance for trial formalities. Finally, the students competed in their extremely competitive region through three rounds of competition.
“I became involved after judging the competition some years ago. I could tell some of these teams had no attorney assistance, and could really benefit from my expertise,” Kim said. “Having attended a large public high school myself with limited resources and no mock trial team, I liked the idea of leveling the playing field a bit and possibly being a role model to students who may not otherwise come in contact with lawyers.”
