Hal McCard Named a 2025 American Health Law Association Fellow

June 20, 2025

Spencer Fane is pleased to announce Hal McCard has been selected as a 2025 Fellow of the American Health Law Association (AHLA), one of the highest honors in health law. He is one of only three legal professionals in the U.S. to receive an invitation this year.

This program comprises the AHLA’s most illustrious members and recognizes their exceptional contributions to the legal profession, health law field, and AHLA. Fellows are chosen based on their career achievements, leadership, breadth of knowledge, and outstanding service to the health law community.

Hal has been an active member of the AHLA since 1989, and he has advanced the organization’s mission through leadership roles that include chairing the Hospitals and Health Systems Practice Group from 2012-2015 and serving on the AHLA Board of Directors from 2016-2022. During his board tenure, Hal also chaired the Practice Groups and Special Councils Committee, where he focused on streamlining the structure for content-generating groups, implementing online tools for leaders, and developing evaluation methodologies. In addition, Hal is recognized as an educator, author, and frequent speaker at AHLA’s in-person conferences.

At Spencer Fane, Hal builds upon a distinguished, decadeslong career designing and implementing legal solutions for health systems, hospitals, physician group practices, and ancillary/allied health care providers. He has served as General Counsel to not-for-profit, private equity-backed, and publicly traded health systems, providing strategic legal advice to their boards and management. Hal has also led legal teams through major health system mergers and acquisitions and complex state and federal regulatory compliance challenges, including fraud and abuse, licensing and contracting, physician relations, and transactions.
