September 23, 2026

Spencer Fane attorney Catherine Weiss Butto authored the article Amendments to NYC’s Protected Time Off Rules Now in Effect, recently published by the New York Law Journal.

In Catherine’s article, which originated as a firm blog post, she examines New York City’s updated rules governing employee protected leave and explains how the changes expand employer compliance obligations. She outlines new requirements related to leave administration, recordkeeping, employee notifications, and enforcement under the amended law.

“To ensure compliance with the amended rules, employers should take the following measures: Review employee handbooks, offer letters, rehiring procedures, and other applicable policies and revise as necessary to ensure protected leave policies are compliant with the amended rules, including by adding the ‘Immediately Available Hours’ requirements,” Catherine wrote.

At the firm, Catherine represents corporations and individuals in a wide range of civil matters, with a focus on complex commercial litigation and employment counseling and disputes. She takes a strategic, analytical approach to litigation, guiding clients through all stages of the legal process, including prelitigation assessment, discovery, motion practice, and resolution in both state and federal courts. Catherine also advises employers on preventing and addressing discrimination, harassment, and retaliation claims, as well as a broad range of day-to-day employment issues across the employee life cycle.
