Shawn Tuma Previews Crisis Management Panel on Redefining Cybersecurity Podcast

March 26, 2024

Spencer Fane attorney Shawn Tuma was a recent guest on the Redefining Cybersecurity Podcast to promote his breakout session at the 2024 Minorities in Cybersecurity (MiC) Annual Conference, held March 24-28 in Dallas.

On the episode, Crisis Management: Strategies When Communicating with Multiple Stakeholders, Shawn joined Mary Chaney (MiC) and Melanie Ensign (Discernible Inc.) to discuss their upcoming panel of the same name with podcast host Sean Martin. They provided valuable insights on the importance of adequate preparations in cyber incident response, using secure communication platforms during a crisis, and creating welcoming and productive environments in cybersecurity.

“Something that I use with clients on incident response planning and preparation [is] a saying from an old general, Omar Bradley: ‘Amateurs talk strategy and tactics. Professionals study logistics.’” Shawn said. “And so much of what we do in incident response is about logistics. Do we know our team? Do we have our team? Do we know what their roles are? Do we know what each other’s roles are? Who can do the things that need to be done, and how do we reach them when we need them?”

The third annual MiC Conference is a one-of-a-kind, executive leadership conference for minority, women, and nonbinary professionals in cybersecurity. The event provides an opportunity for 200 cybersecurity leaders to network and have honest and critical conversations focusing on the unique challenges underrepresented talent has in the cybersecurity profession.

At Spencer Fane, Shawn co-leads the firm’s Data Privacy and Cybersecurity Practice Group. He helps businesses protect their information and protect themselves from their information. Shawn is a frequently sought-out thought leader who represents a wide range of clients in dealing with cybersecurity, data privacy, data breach and incident response, regulatory compliance, computer fraud-related legal issues, and cyber-related litigation.
