Spencer Fane attorney Shawn Tuma returned as a State Bar of Texas Podcast guest on the program’s September 4 episode, Cracking the Legal Code for AI.
In his conversation with host Rocky Dhir, Shawn discussed Texas’ evolving regulatory landscape for artificial intelligence. They outlined recently enacted technology laws – which prioritize harm prevention and ethical use – and explained their purpose, wider implications, and duty of technology competence.
“Our legislature took a very wise approach, in my opinion, with how they approached the technology legislation this year in that there weren’t a lot of fireworks. Most of what we saw was fairly bipartisan at least in purpose and overall design,” Shawn said. “They have found a balance for right now with enacting laws that tend to be the things that most people agree on.”
At the firm, Shawn co-leads the firm’s Cyber | Data | Artificial Intelligence | Emerging Technology Practice Group while serving as Office Managing Partner for the firm’s Plano, Texas location. In addition to these leadership roles and extensive thought leadership throughout the industry, he maintains a robust law practice that helps a wide range of clients navigate cybersecurity, data privacy, data breach and incident response, regulatory compliance, computer fraud-related legal issues, and cyber-related litigation.
