Shawn Tuma Considers Privacy Risks of Thought-Reading Technology for SecureWorld

March 7, 2024

Spencer Fane attorney Shawn Tuma recently wrote an article published by the renowned cybersecurity platform SecureWorld.

The piece, Protecting the Privacy of Our Thoughts from Brain Scanning Technology, originated as a blog post on Shawn’s personal website. In it, Shawn contemplates the future of brain-scanning technology aimed at reading a person’s thoughts. Noting the data privacy and cybersecurity risks such scientific advances like the Neuralink brain chip could foster, Shawn commends those who are already looking to protect consumers through regulations.

“Colorado and Minnesota [are proposing] legislation that is aimed at establishing rights and protections for information collected from our thoughts through the neural signals that can be scanned and collected from our brains. Kudos to these states, and others, as these kinds of protections are being considered,” Shawn said.

At Spencer Fane, Shawn helps businesses protect their information and protect themselves from their information. He represents a wide range of clients, from small to midsize companies to Fortune 100 companies, across the U.S. and globally in dealing with cybersecurity, data privacy, data breach and incident response, regulatory compliance, computer fraud-related legal issues, and cyber-related litigation. As a sought-out thought leader in the industry, he frequently collaborates with SecureWorld and other cybersecurity organizations.
