Keith Call Talks About How Being a Lawyer Has Made Him a Better Person in Utah Bar Journal Column

June 5, 2025

Spencer Fane attorney Keith Call authored an article published in the May/June issue of the Utah Bar Journal. The article is part of his regular Focus on Ethics & Civility series.

In his article, Who Are You Becoming?, Keith shares a recent experience where a thoughtful law student asked a profound question, “Has being a lawyer made you a better person?”

Keith shared, “I explained that being a lawyer taxes every aspect of my being. It has made me more disciplined, more thoughtful, and more conscious of how social systems affect real people. It has helped me learn how to navigate and solve incredibly difficult problems – for others and for myself. It has made me a better writer, speaker, and thinker. I could add much more to that list.”

In the article, Keith explains the research of Dr. Larry Richard, a leading expert on the psychology of lawyer behavior, including how certain personality traits are found disproportionately in attorneys versus the general population. He outlines the specific traits mentioned – high levels of skepticism, a heightened sense of urgency, and extremely low interest in sociability – and the pros and cons of each in both a professional and personal setting.

The publication also features the latest in the Appellate Highlights series authored by Rodney ParkerDani Cepernich, and Andrew Roth.

At Spencer Fane, Keith helps corporate and individual clients with all of their litigation needs so they can stay focused on their core businesses and personal interests. He excels in defending lawyers in professional ethics and liability matters, as well as complex commercial, technology, and IP litigation.
