Karen Olson to Co-Host Clean Water Act Permitting and Mining Industry Webinar

September 9, 2020

Spencer Fane attorney Karen Olson will co-present an upcoming webinar with Geosyntec Consultants covering the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in County of Maui, Hawaii vs. Hawaii Wildlife Fund.

Titled “Groundwater/Surface Water Interface – Emerging Regulatory Challenges and New Solutions for the Mining Industry,” panelists will discuss the potential impact of the Supreme Court’s ruling on operations where groundwater quality could be influenced by industrial discharge activities to groundwater and possible solutions to mitigate compliance risks.  Facilities and operations that manage wastewater discharges in lagoons, ponds, impoundments, basins, and related land features will particularly want to join and learn about the potential regulatory changes.

The webinar will address:

  • What is a functional equivalent of a direct discharge, and what conditions might lead to this equivalency?
  • What tools can be used to evaluate functional equivalency and the effect of natural processes on compliance risks?
  • How can semi-passive treatment technologies help reduce and manage compliance risks?
  • What strategies can be used to improve reliability and control of passive treatment technologies in cold climates?
