John Watson Provides Updates on Boulder Climate Change Lawsuit for Law Week Colorado

July 18, 2025

Spencer Fane attorney John Watson recently contributed thought leadership to Law Week Colorado.

John’s article, Colorado Supreme Court Rules Boulder’s Tort-Based Climate Change Damages Lawsuit Can Proceed in State Court, originated as a firm blog post and explores a climate accountability lawsuit more than seven years in the making. Boulder County and the city of Boulder, Colorado, seek a jury trial, damages and other relief from multiple fossil fuel entities for alleged concealment and misrepresentation of climate change impacts attributed to their products. Thanks to a May 12, 2025, Supreme Court decision, the lawsuit may proceed.

“The proceedings of this case provide valuable insight into how litigation related to the regulation of interstate and international air pollution will proceed in the future,” John said.

At the firm, John leverages his in-depth commercial trial and litigation knowledge to represent clients in a variety of complex commercial cases, including breach of contract actions, real estate and land development, special district litigation, construction disputes between contractors and subcontractors, securities litigation, public land and natural resources law, mining, oil and gas, wildlife, toxic tort, Superfund, and air, water, and waste environmental cases.
