Independent Investigator Unveils how an Independence Police Officer Earned $160,000 in Overtime

July 30, 2022

Spencer Fane attorney Dan Nelson recently spoke with the Kansas City Star about his role as an independent investigator in the recently-closed investigation into how an Independence police officer earned $160,000 in overtime.

During his interview, Dan states, “We believe that the City of Independence needs to take a look at, to the best of their ability, implementing a clear overtime policy for all city departments. We believe that the city should consider hard overtime caps citywide. We believe that the Independence Police Department, Independence Power and Light, and the Fire Department should examine their overtime policies. Specifically because they’re the types of public safety and disaster response organizations that tend to generate a lot more over time.”
