UNLV School of Law MELSA Panel Explores Representation in Law

Spencer Fane attorney Ayesha Mehdi recently presented at a William S. Boyd School of Law Middle Eastern Law Students Association (MELSA) Diversity in Practice Panel, where she spoke about the need to remain focused on encouraging diversity in the legal profession.

“The legal profession remains one of the least diverse in the United States…for diversity and inclusion efforts to be effective, we must ensure that diverse lawyers are acknowledged, encouraged and actively supported,” Ayesha explained.

Ayesha was joined by Seattle Municipal Court Judge Damon Shadid, American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada Director Athar Haseebullah, and University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Immigration Professor Michael Kagan for a discussion about Middle Eastern and South Asian representation in the legal field. During her remarks, Ayesha added that implicit bias is still contributing to the lack of diversity in recruitment, retention, and advancement.
