Allison Garrett Shares Thoughts on New Department of Education Accreditation Rule

March 13, 2026

Spencer Fane attorney Allison Garrett contributed her legal knowledge to the University Business article, Education Department Provides Breakthrough For New Accreditors.

In the piece, reporter Alcino Donadel outlines a new Department of Education rule that aims to evolve the accreditation system through a more streamlined application process. Allison expressed the need for caution to prevent “accreditor shopping.”

“[G]reat care must be exercised to approve only accreditors that are well-equipped to work with institutions to improve their programs,” Allison said. “Institutions with marginal programs might seek the accreditor most likely to say ‘yes’ rather than the accreditor most helpful in improving overall quality.”

At the firm, Allison plays a critical role in the firm’s higher education practice, resolving complex regulatory, administrative, operational, and transactional issues specific to public and private universities. Supported by a decadeslong track record of success in legal, educational, and leadership roles, she has held prominent positions in government, at a multinational retail corporation, and at the highest levels of several higher education institutions.
