Spencer Fane attorney Allison Garrett recently published an op-ed in University Business.
In her article, Freezing Research: Here Are 4 Ways Schools Feel the Chill, Allison outlined four spheres in which institutions are currently facing challenges due to the “complex web of laws, regulations, Executive Orders, Proclamations, court decisions and political issues relating to research.” She discussed potential roadblocks related to student visas, funding cancellation and reduction, the faculty pipeline, and limitations placed on research areas and practices.
“Decreased foreign talent coming to the U.S., possible cancellation of research funding, talent voting with their feet, and changes to how research is conducted may significantly shift the amount of research conducted in this country,” Allison said. “Senior leaders and researchers will need to watch for additional developments in the future in these areas. For the good of the country and the world, we can all hope that research in crucial areas will continue.”
Allison also recently penned a University Business piece on a proposed endowment tax for university foundations.
A recent addition to Spencer Fane, Allison plays a critical role in the firm’s higher education practice, resolving complex regulatory, administrative, operational, and transactional issues specific to public and private universities. Supported by a decadeslong track record of success in legal, educational, and leadership roles, she has held prominent positions in government, at a multinational retail corporation, and at the highest levels of several higher education institutions.
