The Wild Ride of 2023: New Year, New Laws | 10:30 a.m.- 11:30 a.m.

In the closing months of 2022, a number of new laws were passed at the federal level, and multiple federal agencies have recently proposed significant regulatory changes. The new laws include a new workplace pregnancy accommodation law, new protections for breastfeeding moms, and a new law regarding the enforceability of confidentiality clauses in all kinds of employment agreements. Then, in only the first week of January, the Federal Trade Commission proposed a blockbuster: a nationwide ban on noncompetition agreements that had the human resources and employment law worlds spinning. Joe Hatley and Randi Winter, two experienced employment lawyers, will guide us through these important changes and will provide helpful guidance for employers as we navigate compliance in 2023.

The Exit: Managing Employee Separations | 1:00 p.m.- 2:00 p.m.

In the first two weeks of the new year, almost every day has brought news of new large-scale layoffs at large and small companies across the country. Even in the absence of an announced layoff, managing employee departures poses special challenges. This session, presented by Elizabeth Wente and Liz Felker – a skilled labor and employment attorney and a practiced transactional attorney focused on employee benefits and executive and deferred compensation – will provide helpful guidance for both single-employee departures and larger group separations, including planning for reductions in force, the use of separation agreements, complying with benefit obligations, and more.
