Overview

Mitch Martin assists his clients across a wide array of industries in appellate matters, complex litigation, AI and technology law, and legal ethics. With more than a decade of experience, he advises clients on navigating emerging legal challenges while standing ready to litigate when necessary.

Mitch has tried jury and bench trials in federal and state courts and briefed appeals with favorable results in venues across the country. His litigation experience spans high-stakes commercial disputes often with amounts in controversy in the millions and sometimes billions of dollars, including class actions and mass litigation involving data breach claims, consumer protection litigation (FDCPA and TCPA), wire transfer litigation, and civil rights matters. He has significant experience in banking litigation, products liability, and construction disputes. Recognized by publications and peers for his courtroom strengths, he is also expanding his appellate practice to serve clients who need sophisticated advocacy at the court of appeals level.

In his AI and technology practice, Mitch counsels clients across a spectrum of industries on privacy laws; proper practices for gathering, using, and protecting personal information; and the legal risks associated with emerging technologies, biometric data, and AI. He holds certifications in AI and the Practice of Law from Washington University in St. Louis and has earned his Certified Information Privacy Professional/Europe (CIPP/E) accreditation from the International Association of Privacy Professionals, reflecting his deep knowledge in European privacy frameworks that inform global privacy and AI regulation.

Prior to joining Spencer Fane, Mitch served on a Professional Responsibility Committee, where he consulted directly with general counsel and provided guidance on overall ethics compliance. He now trains attorneys and judges on their professional responsibilities, particularly as they relate to AI adoption and technology use in legal practice and jurisprudence, and speaks regularly on these evolving issues.

Before entering private practice, Mitch worked for the former Chief Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court, the Honorable Lloyd Karmeier; Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois, the Honorable Michael Reagan; and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Illinois.
