New D.C. Partners Discuss Move to Spencer Fane in Law360

April 2, 2026

Spencer Fane attorneys Lauren Friend McKelvey and Mark Rooney discuss their recent move to the firm in the article Spencer Fane Hires Transactions, Banking Partners in D.C., published by Law360.

In the Law360 feature, Lauren remarked on her goal to assist startups through legal challenges in emerging industries, particularly those integrating artificial intelligence. “I’m here to help guide them on AI use – especially startups in heavily regulated spaces like health care and financial services. I’m excited to join Spencer Fane, which is an emerging leader among law firms and has a growing and dynamic team in the cyber, data, AI, and emerging technology practice areas,” she said.

Mark noted the evolving landscape of consumer financial regulation and the firm’s strategic fit for nationwide client needs. “Spencer Fane has made a conscious decision to grow in a way that meets the modern demand.” He goes on to discuss trends in enforcement. “The [Consumer Financial Protection Bureau] is doing very little, but other federal and state regulators are filling the void to some extent. Private consumer lawsuits have not ticked up to the extent you would expect in the absence of significant federal agency action,” he said.

Washington, D.C., Office Managing Partner Bill Powers’ comments in a firm statement were also highlighted. “We’re excited to welcome both Lauren and Mark, each with their own extensive knowledge and unique perspectives in serving clients in financial services and technology industries. Their practices combine time-tested industry knowledge with adaptable, creative strategies that meet the rapid pace and evolving expectations of client work here in D.C. and Virginia, and nationwide,” Bill said.

Lauren employs extensive experience in the startup space to counsel emerging companies and investors on a wide variety of legal and compliance matters facing startups, including transactions, regulatory compliance and privacy, artificial intelligence use and data protection, and general corporate matters.

Mark represents consumer finance companies facing complex litigation and arbitration, combining trusted counsel with fierce advocacy to resolve some of the most contentious disputes. He also regularly helps clients respond to government agency investigations and enforcement actions before the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and other federal and state agencies.
