Shawn Tuma Provides Cybersecurity Insight ‘Treats’ on Counsel Brew Podcast

October 31, 2025

Spencer Fane attorney Shawn Tuma was a recent guest on the Counsel Brew podcast to discuss how to successfully manage critical cybersecurity incidents.

In the episode, “Trick or Treat – Shawn Tuma,” Shawn shared unique insights gleaned from his extensive experience in guiding companies through the complexities of cyberattacks, ransomware, and data breaches. Topics included the components of a breach response; Shawn’s book, ”The GC+CISO Connection,” and its emphasis on the importance of CISO and legal team collaboration; and even fun topics like coffee preferences, trick-or-treating, and Shawn’s love of fountain pens.

“The more time I spent with the CISO community, [I realized] we really need to do something to help CISOs learn the need to have a relationship with their legal counsel, and we need to do something to help our in-house legal counsel understand the need to embrace their CISOs,” he said of choosing to write an article that became a book instead. “We really are the only risk-defenders in the organizations.”

At Spencer Fane, Shawn co-leads the firm’s Cyber | Data | Artificial Intelligence | Emerging Technology Practice Group while serving as Office Managing Partner for the firm’s Plano, Texas, location. In addition to these leadership roles and extensive thought leadership throughout the industry, he maintains a robust law practice that helps a wide range of clients navigate cybersecurity, data privacy, data breach and incident response, regulatory compliance, computer fraud-related legal issues, and cyber-related litigation.
