June 18, 2025

12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. CDT

Join the Spencer Fane BOND Committee as we delve into the historical and legal significance of Juneteenth, featuring the esteemed Dr. Opal Lee, affectionately known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” and her granddaughter, Mrs. Dione Sims, President and Founder of Unity Unlimited, Inc. Explore the profound significance of Juneteenth in American history, tracing its origins and the journey to its recognition as a national holiday, alongside Dr. Lee’s personal story highlighting her relentless efforts in advocating for Juneteenth, the challenges she faced, and how she overcame them.

This webinar focuses on the legal process and implications of establishing a national holiday. We cover the legal framework of national holidays, including the bipartisan support that led to Juneteenth’s inclusion in U.S. Code Title 5, Section 6103. Insights on the lobbying efforts, the walk, and the online petition that were instrumental in this achievement will be shared.

Additionally, we will explore the role of legal advocacy in civil rights movements, drawing historical parallels from the pre-Civil War era to the present day. The discussion will emphasize the importance of legal knowledge in protecting and advancing civil liberties. Ethical considerations in advocating for social justice within legal practice will also be addressed, providing valuable insights for legal professionals.

This session is being submitted for Diversity and Inclusion credit where applicable.
