Aviation-focused attorney joins the firm’s Kansas City Office
Spencer Fane LLP is pleased to welcome John C. Nettels as Of Counsel to the firm’s Business Litigation practice group in Kansas City.
With more than 30 years of experience in trial and appeals, Nettels focuses his practice on complex business, commercial and products liability cases. He has specific experience in representing aviation and aerospace companies, as well as their insurers. He is also a current member of the Aviation Insurance Association.

Within the aviation sector, Nettels is experienced in both federal and state courts and has counseled clients in class actions, multi-party accident suits and multi-district proceedings. Additionally, he has defended various aircraft manufacturers in a range of matters including jury cases, contract issues and product liability cases. Nettels is a published author on aviation topics including federal preemption and the General Aviation Revitalization Act (GARA).
Previously, Nettels was a Partner with Stinson Leonard Street LLP. While practicing law, he served as the Director of Westar Energy in Topeka, Kansas from 2000 to 2010. At Westar Energy, he was involved with the audit, compensation and corporate governance committees and gained experience in various SEC reporting and compliance issues.
Nettels is a former member of the National Association of Corporate Directors. He obtained his law degree and bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas.
