Roger Denny and Bob Lattinville Write Article on New Tax Act’s Impact on College Coaches’ Compensation

Spencer Fane LLP attorneys Roger Denny and Bob Lattinville recently collaborated to write an article published in AthleticDirectorU about effects of the new Tax Cuts and Jobs Act on coaches’ compensation. The article discusses the nuances of the new act, its impacts and the possible strategies for universities moving forward.

Based on Roger and Bob’s recent college coach salary database, the tax associated with Section 4960 of the bill entitled “Excise Tax on Excess Tax Exempt Organization Executive Compensation” could affect at least 240 coaches and athletics directors. “While the reach of this tax is restricted and seemingly immaterial to a large number of college sports industry participants overall, it represents a high-powered rifle shot to Autonomy 5 institutions,” the duo wrote. In addition, the article gives specific examples of how the tax will affect three individual coaches.  Read the full article here.
