Overview

William D. Purnell helps clients define, assess, and minimize risks in an increasingly litigious legal environment, focusing on proactive counsel aimed at avoiding claims with the ability to develop and execute on strategies to efficiently manage overall legal spend.

Will focuses on providing legal counsel for consumer products, heavy construction and industrial equipment manufacturers, and environmental services companies in commercial and products liability matters against toxic torts, multiparty product liability claims, and environmental claims. He also aids business and / or commercial clients and financial institutions in areas including commercial litigation and post-judgment collections.

Before entering private practice, Will served as assistant general counsel of litigation and claims, including warranty matters, at two global manufacturers of industrial products and HVAC and temperature management equipment for residential and commercial applications, and served as corporate counsel for litigation at a global heavy equipment manufacturer. His broad experience encompasses advising on commercial litigation, bankruptcy litigation, e-discovery, personal injury matters, records management, and product liability, including mass torts, premises liability, environmental claims, and class actions. Will has also solidified a trusted reputation in providing strategic counsel to C-suite executive teams and insurers on global risk management and legal spend.

Will brings a proven track record in arbitration, mediation, and settlement negotiations in North America and abroad. He has established an outstanding reputation consulting with companies to generate efficient strategies to assess risks with acquisitions involving legacy liabilities during the due diligence phase.

After completing his undergraduate degree at Tougaloo College, Will earned his Juris Doctor at Vanderbilt University Law School, where he was involved in multiple campus organizations committed to advancing diversity in the legal profession, an initiative he still actively pursues.
