Presentation to the Boulder Chamber of Commerce on Hiring Due Diligence—Credit Checks, Criminal Background Checks and the Use of Social Media

The Dos and Don’ts of Hiring Due Diligence:  Background Checks; Credit Checks; Social Media Reviews with Ron Fano, Managing Partner, Spencer, Fane, Britt & Browne.  Due diligence in hiring is crucial to the success of any employer but knowing exactly what to do and not do in researching a prospective employee, and what pitfalls are out there is imperative for the HR professional.  This presentation will focus on a  discussion of the best practices for doing due diligence before hiring employees and the law governing such due diligence in three specific areas:  criminal background checks, credit checks and social media review.

About Ron Fano:
Ron is the managing partner of Spencer, Fane, Britt & Browne’s Denver office and the head of its Labor and Employment practice group.  Ron’s employment law experience includes more than 23 years of advising employers on all matters related to employment practices, including hiring, leave, discipline and termination issues; employee handbooks and offensive behavior policies; drafting, negotiating and advising clients on employment agreements, severance agreements and non-compete agreements; advising employers regarding wage and hour issues; and litigation in various employment related matters including wrongful termination claims and employment at-will issues, non-compete agreements/non-solicitation agreements, interference with contract claims, employee raiding claims, misappropriation of trade secret claims, wage and hour claims, sexual harassment and discrimination claims, age discrimination claims, and Family and Medical Leave Act claims. Ron is admitted to the bar in Colorado, the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado, and the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals.  He is a graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder and the University of Colorado School of Law.  He resides in Boulder, Colorado.
