May 31, 2023

Spencer Fane was pleased to serve as the Premier Sponsor for the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR) Tennessee Chapter Spring Conference. The May 16-17 event was hosted at the firm’s Nashville office and featured several Spencer Fane attorneys as speakers.

The CUPA-HR Tennessee Chapter comprises approximately 75 HR professionals from 21 different colleges and universities across the state. Through events like the Spring Conference, the organization provides leadership, resources, and collaborative opportunities centered on higher education workplace issues. At the conference, attorneys Sam Jackson, Stacey Garrett Koju, Julia Vander Weele, Ruthie White, Bethany Vanhooser, Kristen Walker, and James Crumlin provided valuable insights on such issues.

In their presentation, Tennessee Legal and Public Policy Update: What HR Needs to Know, Sam and Stacey discussed some of the latest policy developments unfolding in Tennessee and at the federal level. Next, Julia presented the webinar Secure Act 2.0 – Reshaping the Retirement Landscape. Following a Spencer Fane-sponsored Tennessee Connection Luncheon, Ruthie White led the presentation Multi-State Workforce Challenges: Legal and Practical Implications for Higher Education. Bethany and Kristen educated attendees on the PWFA and PUMP Act for their session, Workplace Accommodations and Protections for Pregnant and Nursing Mothers. During the event’s final educational session, Intellectual Diversity at Tennessee Colleges and Universities, James examined the impact of divisive concepts legislation that seeks to limit what topics may be explored in classrooms.
