Spencer Fane LLP is pleased to announce the addition of attorney Michael D. Murphy in conjunction with the opening of a Spencer Fane office in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. With the addition and the new office, Spencer Fane now has five offices in the state of Missouri, advancing its strong regional footprint and state-wide presence further into southeast Missouri.

An experienced first-chair litigator, Murphy is licensed in Missouri, Texas and Colorado, and has defended cases throughout the country in both state and federal courts. His primary practice focus is on product liability defense, commercial litigation, toxic tort and medical negligence actions.
Murphy is a long-standing member of the American Bar Association’s Litigation Section and has served as a member of the Expert Witnesses Committee, the Trial Evidence Committee and the Products Liability committee. He is a member of the Defense Research Institute, as well as a past board member of the Missouri Organization of Defense Lawyers, for which he was awarded the Board Service Award in 2014 in recognition of his outstanding work.
During his career, Murphy has received numerous awards and recognitions for his work, including the Ike Skelton, Sr. Prize for Excellence in Trial Practice, the American Jurisprudence Award for Trial Practice and the W. Oliver Rasch Award. He has also been named a Fellow in the American Bar Foundation and a “Missouri-Kansas Super Lawyer” in 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. He is a Fellow in the Litigation Counsel of America, an exclusive honorary society of trial lawyers.
Murphy graduated Order of the Coif from University of Missouri School of Law in 1991. During his time in law school, he was the editor-in-chief of the Missouri Law Review and was awarded the Judge Shepard Barclay Prize, recognizing the senior who has obtained the highest standing in scholarship and moral leadership.
