NYC Department of Education Settles Student-to-Teacher Harassment Lawsuit

In an unusual case, the New York City department of education recently settled a lawsuit filed by a Brooklyn high school teacher who alleged sexual harassment and verbal assault by her students. As part of the settlement, the NYC school system paid the teacher $450,000 and expunged poor performance ratings from her record. The teacher alleged that she reported her students’ harassment and verbal abuse multiple times and requested transfers, but administration did nothing to address the situation. Sexual harassment claims are typically brought by employees against co-workers or supervisors, but this case is a reminder that plaintiff’s attorneys use discrimination laws to assert inventive claims.
