McKesson Corp., Allscripts, athenahealth Inc., Greenway Medical Technologies Inc., RelayHealth, and Cerner announced at the 2013 Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society annual meeting in New Orleans that they have banded together to form an independent trade association. Known as CommonWellHealth Alliance, the new association aims to develop “seamless interoperability” with each of the member company’s health information technology products. If the goal of the CommonWellHealth Alliance is achieved, the vision of a national health information exchange may become a reality.
Providers should begin conversations with their health care information technology providers in the very near future to determine whether their health information systems are capable of meeting or being adapted to meet the interoperability standards that are developed and what if any, are the additional costs associated with any necessary changes.
