Spencer Fane attorney Mathew Petersen was recently interviewed by the St. Joseph News-Press (News-Press NOW) and KNPG television in St. Joseph regarding banking issues surrounding Missouri’s new medical marijuana legislation.
Titled “Bankrolling marijuana comes with complications,” the article and interview outline the risks banks could face if they work with marijuana-related businesses. “Since marijuana remains an illegal activity at the federal level,” Mathew explained, “technically for a bank that chooses to bank marijuana-related businesses, they’re engaged in money laundering.”
