Spencer Fane attorney Kate Whitby coordinated the St. Louis office’s attorney and staff participation in a holiday gift donation, including clothing, toys, school supplies, tablet computers and game consoles, stuffed animals, bicycles, scooters and skateboards (with helmets), to the Motion for Kids charitable gift drive.
Each year Motion for Kids provides a holiday party for up to 2,500 St. Louis area children in the foster care system or with one or more parent in prison. These children are matched up with sponsors from the St. Louis legal community (lawyers, judges, paralegals, office administrators, law students, legal secretaries, and their families and friends), who purchase and wrap gifts chosen from each child’s wish list. The gifts are then collected and distributed to the kids’ guardians during a Saturday party on the campus of St. Louis University, complete with visits to Santa and with local celebrities such as the Cardinals’ Fred Bird and the Blues’ Louie the polar bear, face-painting and games, a nook with books to take home, and a kid-friendly lunch.
Motion for Kids began more than 30 years ago, and continues today, to make sure each child seriously impacted by the criminal justice system also receives at least one positive thing from the legal community – a party to attend, and a gift to unwrap for the holidays.
