Spencer Fane partner Bob Lattinville recently provided insight for an article featured in USA Today discussing universities’ response to economic challenges and how that has affected coaches’ pay.
Titled “College football coaches’ COVID-19 pay cuts are not always what they seem,” the article examined the ways universities have approached compensation, including temporary pay cuts that have ranged from as little as the elimination of an $80 monthly cell phone allowance to as much as $1.25 million.
“There’s not really a legal right to make the cut, certainly from a contractual standpoint. And there’s not any obligation to take the cut,” Bob explained in the article. “I just think it’s good business on both parts, by agreeing to do it.”
