Spencer Fane Project Receives Phoenix Award Recognition

The Phoenix Award winners represent outstanding revitalization projects from each of the 10 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regions as well as projects having a special community impact. The winning projects were selected by a panel of environmental professionals and business and government leaders based on a set of five criteria: magnitude of the project, innovative techniques, solutions to regulatory/social issues, and impact upon the community.

Spencer Fane Partner, Baerbel Schiller represented the St. Louis County Economic Council in the clean up and redevelopment of Region 7, Lemay Riverfront Brownfield Redevelopment Project, also known as the River Front Casino project. The land previously owned by the Air Force, was cleaned up and redeveloped into an entertainment area for the benefit of the surrounding community, bringing more than 1,000 new jobs to the region and $375 million in local investment. Lemay Riverfront Brownfield Redevelopment Project was selected as the 2010 Phoenix Award winner from EPA Region 7.

Phoenix Award winning projects include the latest in housing initiatives with affordable, urban and veteran housing, major waterfront redevelopment projects, wetlands restoration, significant job creation and retention, and mixed-use complexes with significant community, entertainment and cultural assets that are destinations for both residents and tourists. Created in 1997, this prestigious award honors individuals and groups who are working to solve critical environmental and community challenges when transforming formerly used real estate into productive new uses.
